Research project founded by Thyssen Stiftung:
Invisible networks: Women in Early Modern Philosophy
Reconstruction and documentation of the intellectual legacy of Elisabeth Princess Palatine (1618-1680)
Elisabeth the Palatine (1618-1680), daughter of the famous Winter King Frederick V Elector Palatine and Elizabeth Stuart, was one of the most outstanding learned women during the 17th century.
For more than 40 years she corresponded with famous philosophers like Descartes or Leibniz, religious thinkers and scholar in the Netherlands, France, England and Germany.
As many other women during this time, also Elisabeth became forgotten during the centuries and is now no longer considered as a female scholar and philosopher. With this project we try to rediscover Elisabeth and her intellectual legacy.
